Introduction (2022): I have consistently written about the films of Philippe Grandrieux since my first encounter with his work in 1999. Several times commissioned to write for publications in non-English languages (Spanish or French), I have tended to produce an ongoing mosaic, looking now at some general cultural context, at other times the material detail of the films themselves. The following piece, written in 2007, is one of the more general approaches; it should be read in tandem with other material on this website (and also forthcoming in a book of essays on World Cinema directors) addressing particular Grandrieux films and their concrete, formal aspects and effects.
